It’s easy to get discouraged when the circumstances surrounding you seem to mock God and His promise to you. But the truth is that God’s Word is forever settled in heaven. God is not a man that He should lie. If you focus on negative circumstances, doubt, fear and unbelief will overwhelm you like a flood and drown your faith.
When the ten spies were sent into the Promised Land to bring back a report, a majority of eight were overwhelmed with unbelief, and misery loves company. Discouraged, they spread doom throughout the entire camp of Israel until everyone was discouraged. That is the enemy’s plan for each one of us – to focus on ourselves and our problems instead of moving forward in what God has instructed us to do.
Just two out of ten, Joshua and Caleb stood firm in the midst of discouragement and declared that with God, they could take the land. Your perspective is the key. When you receive a promise from God, it’s not your job to fulfill the promise. It’s your job to obey. Since it is God’s promise, He takes full responsibility to fulfill His Word.
The Israelites with the negative report were right in one sense. God’s promise was so big that it could not be fulfilled by them alone. Without God, they could not do it, and neither can you. The minute you leave God’s side to go get the job done, you will find yourself ahead of Him, lagging behind, or on a completely different path on the way to being stranded in the wilderness. That is when your enemies will be happy to remind you of all your faults and failures.
Remember that it is God’s promise and God is not a quitter. Every time you fall or fail, He will be there to encourage you to get back up again. Your job is to partner with God by taking Him at His word, trusting Him to do what He said He would do and obeying as He leads and directs you step by step. When God fulfills His promise, you will be a walking testimony for Jesus Christ.
It’s not about the promise, but the Promise Keeper. God’s desire in taking you through the wilderness into the Promised Land is to move you into a deeper, unshakeable experience of who He is in relation to you. Knowing the Father more intimately reaches far beyond the victory of receiving the promise. He is the treasure and prized possession of your faith.
Through God we shall do valiantly: for He it is that shall tread down our enemies. Psalm 108:13
